Only 8 months after being released, he died of pneumonia and heart failure in the same study where Danny was shot. The book is based on true characters and events that happened in Savannah, particularly the murder of Danny Hansford. There are a handful of former private residences that have been opened to the public for tours where you’ll discover the collision of history and beauty. Just across the street from the Armstrong House is the Oglethorpe Club, the most prestigious private club in the South. In 2019 it was renovated by luxury hotelier Richard C Kessler, a Savannah native, who currently resides here. It later served as the campus for the Armstrong Junior College then the offices of a law firm. This opulent 25,000-square-foot granite and glazed-brick mansion was built in 1919 as a private residence. The Armstrong House is also situated on the square and is one of the most impressive homes in Georgia. Many notable guests have stayed here including Oliver Stone, Marc Jacobs, and John Berendt while he was writing the book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
